Perched on a cliff overlooking the Taiwan Strait, Gushi Cliff Coffee offers more than just a premium $56 coffee experience. Visitors descend 130 meters down a steep rock face in Fuzhou's Gushi village to reach a wooden bench with views spanning the coast to Taiwan's Matsu Islands, a destination that has drawn adventurers and photographers alike.
The experience fee includes coffee served in a thermos, insurance, safety gear, and a personal coach, as the trip requires reservations a day in advance. In recent years, Gushi village, known for its old stone houses, has transformed into a tourism hotspot with guesthouses, campsites, and adventure-driven activities like this.
Photos of the café, shared widely on Chinese social media, show a range of experiences, from marriage proposals to themed photo shoots with customers dressed as superheroes. Owner Xue Ke, who opened the café on China's "Golden Week" holiday, says the business hosts about 50 people on weekdays and twice that on weekends. He credits the view of Taiwan for choosing this unique location, noting, "I could even see the street lights on Matsu."
Visitors have mixed feelings about the experience's value. Ye Kunkun, a recent visitor, described the exhilarating experience, but added that, for her, the price may be too steep to repeat. Another visitor, Lin Jiaxin, described her fear of letting go of the safety rope but said that the resulting photos made the adventure worthwhile.
While some feel the cost is high for a quick experience, others see it as a once-in-a-lifetime thrill. As Xue puts it, “This is not an ordinary coffee.”
